Country Meadow Diorama / Story Box

Diorama (story boxes) are one of my favourite crafts to do with my girls along with collage. Introducing children to mixed media art work is fantastic for helping develop their creativity which can only be a good thing.

These Country Meadow Story boxes were made a few years ago by RoRo and RaRa when they were just over 4 years old.

Sheep story boxes

When making story boxes you start with the edges and work inwards

1. Take 2 boxes and paint the inside blue

2. I drew a pencil line on the inside of the box and told them to only paint on one side of the line … guess who wasn’t listening?!

3. Make your sheep. Bend 2 pipe cleaners in half to make the legs. Then glue them on to a cotton wool ball or large pom-pom.

4. Glue googly eyes onto a small pom-pom for the head and leave to Dry

5. Make a tree. Get an old cork from a bottle and cover it with glue (guess which of my girls doesn’t like getting messy?) and cover it in tissue paper.

6. Make the tree top by taking 2 circles of tissue paper and fold each one into quarters. Glue them to either side of the cork trunk and decorate.

7. We used coloured sand for the grass and scrunched tissue paper circles over cotton wool for the sun.

8. By now the sheep legs and eyes should be dry so stick the head to the body. Add cut pipe cleaner to make the ears.

9. We used border roll (the stuff they use in schools) to make the grassy hills although it could just have easily been painted. This was a little tricky for the girls to do on their own. I cut and bent it to size first. then took it out and let the girls cover it in glue. I then stuck it inside the box and they smoothed it down.

10. Flower shapes and spangles were then stuck in the box and on the tree and then everything was glued into position.

A craft to be treasured for years and years.

    These are wonderful!

I love the sheep, so sweet. And as the left-handed twin to a right-handed brother, I’m really fascinated to see the differences between your girls. x
