Using Pebbles To Make Pebble Art

If you want to focus your kids pebble hunting on the beach get them to look for pebbles to make some stunning yet simple Pebble Art. It’s great fun, can be made by all ages and you get to have some seriously cool art to hang on your walls (note: the pebbles need to be stuck on with a glue gun so an adult/big person will have to do the sticking).

Pebble Craft Stone Art

The simplicity of pebble art pictures is mesmerising and love how easy it is for children to be involved in all stages including  the initial trip out to collect the stones (talking about the shape & texture), followed by hands on placing and design through to to framing the finished piece.

Demonstrate How To Make A Pebble Art Picture First

Before we went out looking for pebbles I made a cat pebble art picture as an example.

The idea of the demonstration is to look at the shape, colour & texture of pebbles to see how you can use them to represent objects within a picture. Small flatter pebbles work best as the rounder lumpier pebbles stick out to far. You can also add bits of string, wood, leaves etc (even a few marks with a pen) but remember less is more.

You Will Need

‘Flattish’ pebbles, sticks, hb pencils, erasure, pens, Hot glue gun & picture frames.

1. Take the back and any glass/plastic away from the picture frame so that all your using is the frame. Lay this down on a sketch book and play with the pebbles. Look at them touch them. Move them around on the page. Draw some simple lines or add twigs, string etc and see how they look. Keep doing this until you have a rough design of your picture.

2. Next cut a piece of card that will fit into your picture frame and put the back on so that the frame is complete. Now reposition the pebbles, twigs, string on to the card in the picture frame and carefully draw in your lines. Next secure all the loose pieces (pebbles, string, wooed etc) to the card using a glue gun.

Spikey Hair Man Pebble Art Pink Spikey Man by RoRo aged 6

‘Pink Spikey Man’ and the ‘Bird On A Rock’ were made by my 6 year old twins. All their own work. I was particularly impressed wit RaRa’s patience as she searched through the pebbles looking for pebbles of the same colour that would fit together to make her rock shape.
